Why do we use feet instead of metres?
Similar to stones and pounds and their metric counterpart, kilograms, the US and UK use imperial measurements to measure human height.
The foot is an ancient unit of measurement originating as the name would suggest, from the approximate length of a human foot. The Greeks, Romans and Chinese all used a variation of the foot, however, its only use today occurs in the UK, the US and Canada.
In the UK, the commonly used parlance for a person’s height is in feet and inches, whereas, in the US, a person’s height will commonly be said as inches, ignoring the feet part. In most of the rest of the world, a person’s height will be recorded in centimetres, usually abbreviated to cm.
