Usage of kilograms, stones and pounds around the world

The UK and US are two of the last few countries in the world still using the imperial system of measurements.

The US commonly measures weights of persons in pounds only (abbreviated to lbs).

Whereas in the UK, stones and pounds are commonly used when talking about ones weight.

Confusingly for visitors, the UK also interchanges between imperial and metric, for example a bag of sugar purchased in a supermarket will be listed as weighing 500 grams, but in a pub you will be served your beer in pints.

Continental Europe and most of the rest of the world now use the metric system, which is easier to understand as it is a decimal system.

Imperial System versus the Metric System

The United Kingdom invented the imperial system and the system of units were first defined in the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824.

The imperial system became commonly used throughout the former British Empire in the 19th and early 20th century. Although the vast majority of former colonies have now converted to using the metric system.

Imperial standard units can still be seen in public squares throughout the UK such as in Trafalgar Square in London or George Square in Glasgow.

In the imperial system of weights, one stone = 14 pounds and one pound = 16 ounces.

The metric system was originated in France by the French Academy of Sciences after the revolution of 1789.

In the metric system, 100 grams = 1 kilogram.
